About the Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) exam

AOCNP assesses advanced oncology practice across prevention, diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, cancer therapy, supportive and palliative care, emergencies, psychosocial assessment, and APRN professional responsibilities. Questions require synthesis of pathology, biomarkers, imaging, comorbidity, goals, evidence, toxicity, and response across the cancer continuum.

AOCNP examination matrix

The percentages below are the approximate exam-score weights published by Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC). Use them to allocate study time, then adjust for your own weak areas.

28%

Cancer Continuum

Apply advanced screening, prevention, hereditary risk, assessment, diagnosis, staging, individualized planning, navigation, survivorship, surveillance, and end-of-life care.

  • Identify at-risk populations and select evidence-based screening, prevention, and hereditary assessment
  • Synthesize history, examination, performance status, imaging, pathology, biomarkers, laboratory data, staging, and reproductive needs
  • Develop coordinated guideline-based plans spanning treatment, surveillance, survivorship, palliation, goals, grief, and end-of-life care

45%

Cancer Treatment and Supportive Care

The dominant domain covers cancer therapies, research, response assessment, acute and late effects, supportive care, palliation, comorbidity, and controlled-substance safety.

  • Apply advanced principles for systemic, localized, surgical, radiation, transplant, multimodal, clinical-trial, and integrative treatment
  • Assess response through imaging, biomarkers, clinical findings, performance, and disease trajectory
  • Prevent, diagnose, treat, monitor, and educate about treatment symptoms, late effects, comorbidity interactions, palliation, and controlled substances

12%

Oncologic Emergencies

Recognize emergency risk, form focused differentials, initiate evidence-based treatment, and reassess response.

  • Identify etiology, risk factors, prevention opportunities, early findings, and severity
  • Perform focused assessment and distinguish competing emergency diagnoses
  • Initiate and monitor timely treatment, stabilization, consultation, disposition, and escalation

10%

Psychosocial Issues

Assess distress, coping, recurrence fear, depression, trauma, cognition, family relationships, comorbidity, risk, and resources.

  • Select and interpret appropriate psychosocial assessment instruments
  • Identify risk factors, high-risk populations, psychiatric and cognitive comorbidity, and treatment effects
  • Coordinate evidence-based support, crisis care, referrals, family interventions, and community resources

5%

Professional Practice and Roles of the APRN

Apply culture, bias, law, regulation, accreditation, ethics, advanced-practice standards, evidence, outcomes, quality, competency, education, and mentorship.

  • Practise within licensure, documentation, legal, ethical, accreditation, and advanced-practice standards
  • Evaluate outcomes and use evidence and quality-improvement strategies across patients and systems
  • Assess competency, orient and educate peers, prepare materials, mentor, and address cultural competence and bias

How to use this AOCNP diagnostic

The diagnostic samples all five official domains, with nearly half devoted to Cancer Treatment and Supportive Care. Classify misses as screening, diagnostic reasoning, staging, treatment planning, systemic or localized therapy, response, toxicity, supportive care, emergency, psychosocial care, APRN role, or quality and evidence.

High-yield AOCNP study priorities

Priority 1

Spend nearly half of practice on treatment

Use cases requiring regimen purpose, mechanism, patient selection, toxicity prevention, monitoring, response assessment, supportive care, and plan modification.

Priority 2

Synthesize before choosing

Combine pathology, biomarkers, stage, prior therapy, performance status, organ function, comorbidity, fertility, goals, evidence, and access before evaluating a plan.

Priority 3

Practise emergency differentials

Compare infection, metabolic disturbance, obstruction, thrombosis, neurologic compression, treatment reaction, immune toxicity, and disease progression using focused findings.

Priority 4

Answer at the APRN level

Include diagnosis, prescribing and monitoring, consultation, evidence appraisal, outcome evaluation, quality improvement, scope, documentation, competency, and system impact.

AOCNP exam FAQ

How many questions are on the AOCNP exam?

ONCC currently lists 165 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 125 count toward the score and 40 are unscored pretest questions that cannot be identified during the examination.

How long is the AOCNP exam?

The test session is three hours, including 15 minutes for the computer-based testing tutorial before the exam and a post-test survey. There are no scheduled breaks, and the timer continues during an unscheduled break.

How is the AOCNP content outline weighted?

The 2026 outline is weighted Cancer Continuum 28%, Cancer Treatment and Supportive Care 45%, Oncologic Emergencies 12%, Psychosocial Issues 10%, Professional Practice and Roles of the APRN 5%. The percentages apply to the 125 scored questions.

How long is the AOCNP testing window?

ONCC currently provides a 90-day testing window after authorization to test. Candidates should confirm processing times, authorization dates, and scheduling instructions directly with ONCC.

Who should verify eligibility for AOCNP?

Candidates should confirm the current license, education, experience, practice-hour, and continuing-education requirements on the official ONCC page before applying. This study page does not determine eligibility.

Does this diagnostic predict whether I will pass?

No. A 15-question diagnostic is a low-confidence baseline, not a validated pass prediction. Review every rationale, then use larger mixed and domain-specific sets to build a more stable readiness estimate.

Is MedPorium affiliated with ONCC?

No. MedPorium is an independent education platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
