C-NPT exam guide

About the Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT) exam

C-NPT assesses the specialized knowledge required to move neonatal and pediatric patients safely between care settings. Nearly half of the blueprint is transport core knowledge, with the remainder divided equally between neonatal and pediatric clinical issues. Preparation must integrate physiology, stabilization, environment, equipment, communication, safety, and contingency planning.

MedPorium is an independent education platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by National Certification Corporation (NCC). Exam details can change; confirm them with the official source before applying.

Knowledge to review for the C-NPT exam

These foundations support the practical tasks in the official examination matrix.

Transport systems and environment

  • Modes, team composition, dispatch, triage, communication, documentation, consent, legal and ethical issues, quality, safety, infection prevention, weight and power limits, oxygen and battery reserves, and contingency planning
  • Altitude, acceleration, vibration, noise, temperature, gas expansion, limited access, fatigue, weather, and operational risk

Patient stabilization and equipment

  • Airway, ventilation, circulation, temperature, glucose, fluids, medications, analgesia, sedation, vascular access, monitoring, securement, packaging, and handoff
  • Incubators, stretchers, ventilators, pumps, monitors, oxygen systems, suction, defibrillation, point-of-care testing, and emergency equipment

Neonatal and pediatric emergencies

  • Prematurity, transition, respiratory disease, congenital heart disease, shock, sepsis, neurologic disease, surgical emergencies, trauma, toxic exposure, and technology dependence
  • Age-specific assessment, dosing, vital signs, developmental needs, family support, and escalation during transport

C-NPT examination matrix

The percentages below are the approximate exam-score weights published by National Certification Corporation (NCC). Use them to allocate study time, then adjust for your own weak areas.

48%

Transport Core Knowledge

Plan and execute safe transport through system coordination, risk assessment, physiology, equipment, communication, and emergency preparedness.

  • Select mode, team, equipment, route, timing, receiving destination, and backup resources from patient acuity and operational risk
  • Account for altitude, gas expansion, vibration, acceleration, noise, temperature, limited access, weather, and transport duration
  • Stabilize, package, secure, monitor, document, communicate, prevent infection, manage equipment and reserves, and respond to deterioration or failure

26%

Clinical Issues in Neonatal Transport

Apply neonatal physiology and stabilization principles to premature, transitional, critically ill, surgical, and technology-dependent infants.

  • Manage airway, oxygenation, ventilation, circulation, thermoregulation, glucose, fluids, nutrition, pain, and medication needs
  • Recognize respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, infectious, metabolic, hematologic, gastrointestinal, and congenital emergencies
  • Anticipate transport-specific deterioration, reassess trends, titrate support, and communicate changes promptly

26%

Clinical Issues in Pediatric Transport

Apply age-specific assessment and stabilization to pediatric medical, surgical, trauma, neurologic, respiratory, and toxicologic emergencies.

  • Use pediatric airway, ventilation, perfusion, fluid, medication, pain, sedation, and monitoring principles
  • Manage respiratory failure, shock, arrhythmia, neurologic crisis, trauma, burns, poisoning, infection, and surgical emergencies
  • Address developmental, psychosocial, restraint, safeguarding, family, and technology-dependent care needs

How to use this C-NPT diagnostic

The 15 questions sample all three official categories. For every scenario, separate pre-transport stabilization from in-transit management: identify transport risk, choose equipment and team resources, anticipate environmental effects, secure the patient and devices, monitor trends, prepare contingencies, and communicate with sending and receiving teams.

High-yield C-NPT study priorities

Priority 1

Make transport core knowledge the anchor

At 48%, operational and environmental knowledge is almost half the exam. Study how mode, altitude, time, access limitations, reserves, securement, communication, and contingency planning change clinical care.

Priority 2

Stabilize before movement

Rehearse structured pre-transport assessment, correction of immediate threats, airway and line security, thermal protection, medication preparation, equipment checks, and explicit thresholds for delaying departure.

Priority 3

Use age-specific physiology

Neonatal and pediatric domains are equally weighted, but expected vital signs, airway anatomy, fluid needs, dosing, disease patterns, and developmental needs differ. Avoid applying one age group’s assumptions to the other.

Priority 4

Plan for failure in transit

Practise oxygen, battery, ventilator, pump, monitor, airway, vascular-access, weather, route, and clinical deterioration contingencies when access to the patient and outside support are limited.

C-NPT exam FAQ

How many questions are on the C-NPT exam?

The 2026 NCC candidate guide lists 125 questions: 100 scored items and 25 unscored pretest items embedded throughout the examination.

How long is the C-NPT exam?

NCC allows 2 hours to complete the examination.

How is the C-NPT content outline weighted?

The guide assigns 48% to Transport Core Knowledge, 26% to neonatal transport clinical knowledge, and 26% to pediatric transport clinical knowledge.

What does the Neonatal Pediatric Transport exam emphasize?

It emphasizes safe interfacility transport planning and execution plus age-specific stabilization and management of neonatal and pediatric patients in a constrained transport environment.

How is the C-NPT exam delivered?

NCC offers computer-based testing at test centers and through live remote proctoring. Confirm current identification, technical, scheduling, and testing-space requirements directly with NCC.

Does this diagnostic predict whether I will pass?

No. A 15-question diagnostic is a low-confidence baseline, not a validated pass prediction. Use it to identify review priorities and confirm current exam requirements with NCC.

Is MedPorium affiliated with NCC?

No. MedPorium is an independent education platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Certification Corporation.
