NI-BC exam guide
About the Informatics Nursing (NI-BC) exam
NI-BC assesses the nursing informatics role from professional foundations through the full system design lifecycle and into data, interoperability, analytics, and healthcare technology. Questions require balancing people, process, information, clinical workflow, safety, regulation, and technical constraints.

NI-BC examination matrix
The percentages below are the approximate exam-score weights published by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Use them to allocate study time, then adjust for your own weak areas.
36%
Foundations of Practice
Apply informatics science, professional standards, strategy, law, ethics, equity, change, communication, and improvement.
- Use DIKW, systems, organizational, evidence, and informatics principles
- Apply privacy, security, legal, regulatory, accreditation, and ethical requirements
- Lead strategy, projects, change, teams, communication, equity, and improvement
35%
System Design Lifecycle
Move safely from need and requirements through design, testing, implementation, training, support, and optimization.
- Analyze current and future workflow, requirements, feasibility, vendors, and impact
- Design, build, test, migrate, train, implement, and evaluate adoption
- Manage changes, versions, support, downtime, recovery, performance, usability, and optimization
29%
Data Management and Healthcare Technology
Manage standards, data, interoperability, analytics, clinical technology, devices, connectivity, and emerging tools.
- Use terminologies, metadata, standards, databases, integration, archiving, and integrity controls

- Evaluate, integrate, secure, and troubleshoot devices, mobile tools, networks, telehealth, AI, and clinical technology
How to use this NI-BC diagnostic
Classify every miss by lifecycle stage and informatics layer: governance, workflow, requirements, design, build, test, training, implementation, adoption, optimization, data standards, interoperability, analytics, device integration, privacy, security, or downtime.
High-yield NI-BC study priorities
Priority 1
Always locate the lifecycle stage
Requirements, design, build, unit test, integration test, user acceptance, go-live, support, and optimization have different owners and best actions.
Priority 2
Start with workflow, not software
Identify users, clinical goals, current-state failure, constraints, safety risk, future state, and measurable success before selecting a tool.
Priority 3
Know standards by purpose
Distinguish terminology, observation, messaging, imaging, exchange, database, metadata, and security concepts by the problem they solve.
Priority 4
Build safety into change
Use governance, testing, training, communication, backout, downtime, support, monitoring, privacy, and cybersecurity in every implementation scenario.
NI-BC exam FAQ
How many questions are on the NI-BC exam?
ANCC currently lists 150 questions: 125 scored questions and 25 unscored pretest questions that cannot be distinguished during the examination.
How long is the NI-BC exam?
ANCC allows 3 hours to answer the 150 questions.
How is the NI-BC content outline weighted?
The current outline is weighted Foundations of Practice 36%, System Design Lifecycle 35%, Data Management and Healthcare Technology 29%. Displayed percentages may differ from 100% by one point because of rounding.
Who should verify eligibility for NI-BC?
Candidates should confirm the current license, education, practice-hour, role, and continuing-education requirements on the official ANCC page before applying. This study page does not determine eligibility.
How is the NI-BC exam delivered?
ANCC offers the exam as a computer-based test scheduled through Prometric during the candidate's authorization window. Confirm current scheduling and identification requirements with ANCC and Prometric.
Does this diagnostic predict whether I will pass?
No. A 15-question diagnostic is a low-confidence baseline, not a validated pass prediction. Review every rationale, then use larger mixed and domain-specific sets to build a more stable readiness estimate.
Is MedPorium affiliated with ANCC?
No. MedPorium is an independent education platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Nurses Association.
